Recently, the World Health Organization officially declared that the global health emergency caused by Covid-19 should end.

This announcement comes as a relief to billions of people around the world but is particularly positive news for the supply chain industry. For three years now, the shortages and bottlenecks brought about by the devastating effects of the pandemic have wreaked havoc on businesses everywhere. Finally, shippers and manufacturers across the globe are beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

While things will certainly never be the same, the supply chain industry is returning to a facsimile of normal: Shipping rates are dropping, transportation capacity is rising, and inventory levels are stabilizing.

However, there is one area in particular where shippers are not seeing a return to pre-pandemic normal, and that is the widespread use of the GSR waiver from both UPS and FedEx.

During the systemic issues and necessary volume increases in the height of the pandemic, it was easy to understand the broad implementation of these service waivers. However, with the WHO’s recent announcement, the supply chain industry is self-correcting, and it’s time for UPS and FedEx to get on board.

The long term and unexamined use of the GSR waiver is a slap in the face to shippers.  With the recent announcement of a large drop in volume for UPS, the time has come for the national parcel carriers to step up, and pay for missing the guaranteed delivery on all packages.
